What Is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift rejuvenates the neck. Surgeons perform it on their own or with a facelift. A facelift addresses the midface and jawline.
The ideal chin-neck angle (cervicomental angle) in a younger person is 105-120 degrees. With aging, gravity makes neck skin sagging. This increases the chin-neck angle. Other age signs are harsh platysmal muscle banding and excess fat below the chin (submental adiposis).
Dr. Ho is highly experienced in neck lift surgery. Using this knowledge, she tailors her surgical approach to each patient’s anatomy and goals.
Dr. Ho’s Approach
to Neck Lift
As a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Ho specializes in cosmetic procedures of the face. She has extensive experience in aging face procedures like neck lift surgery. Dr. Ho trained in one of the country’s top facial plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship programs.
She is known for her deep neck lift technique. Dr. Ho brings in patients from all over Philadelphia and Wayne. She also brings in patients from greater parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.
During a consultation, Dr. Ho devotes time and effort to making the best surgical plan. Additionally, she sets realistic goals and expectations.
Dr. Ho uses a deep neck lift technique that resuspends the skin, deeper tissues like the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer, and platysma muscle. Because of this, the results look dramatic, natural, and youthful. She also often performs submental liposuction, neck sculpting, and laser skin resurfacing. Consequently, the results are optimal.
Dr. Ho makes incisions in the hairline for minimal scarring. These incisions start at the earlobe and occur along natural creases. Moreover, Dr. Ho often performs facelifts with neck lifts to further enhance results. Through these techniques, she creates a rejuvenated and unoperated look.
What is Deep Neck Lift?
Deep neck lift is one type of neck lift surgery that involves sculpting the deeper structures of the face to produce dramatic and long-lasting neck rejuvenation results. Traditional and more conservative approaches to neck lift usually entail submental liposuction, platysma plication, and removal of some subplatysmal fat. With the deep neck lift technique, excess fat below the platysma layer as well as low-hanging submandibular glands and digastric muscles are trimmed for additional contour improvement. The platysma muscle is sutured back together at the midline and also tacked up under the jawline laterally for maximal resuspension of the muscle layer. The deep neck lift approach to neck lift surgery is more aggressive and is associated with longer recovery but ultimately produces a more definitive and longer-lasting surgical outcome. Dr. Tina Ho is a neck lift and jawline contouring specialist with experience in deep neck lift surgery and will thoroughly assess each neck lift candidate to determine whether they may benefit from a deep neck lift.

Who is the Ideal Neck Lift Candidate?
The ideal neck lift candidate is a healthy non-smoker. Good candidates have no remarkable medical or surgical history. Additionally, good candidates do not take blood-thinning medications. Ideal candidates also have strong bony facial features, normal hyoid position, and good skin tone. Neck plastic surgery is best used for moderate to severe sagging.
The Dedo classification of the aging neck helps surgeons decide who is right for lower face and neck surgeries like submental liposuction, facelifts, and neck lifts. The problems to be addressed also play a role.
In this, Class I patients have good skin and muscle tone. They also have little fat and an ideal cervicomental angle. Class II, III, IV, and V patients have skin laxity, local fat accumulation, platysmal banding, and a weak chin, respectively. Finally, Class VI patients have an abnormal hyoid position and will likely have suboptimal neck lift results.
Dr. Ho uses the Dedo classification, as well as her aesthetic experience and intuition, to achieve beautiful results.
Procedures That Pair Well with a Neck Lift
When it comes to cosmetic procedures, uniformity is important to ensure the targeted and surrounding aesthetics blend well with each other. It isn’t uncommon for people to pair a neck lift with other procedures. This is to ensure each area matches in terms of aesthetics, vitality, and overall image.
Common pairings with a neck lift surgery include:
- Chin/Neck liposuctionFacelift
- Chin augmentation
- Rhinoplasty
- Buccal Fat Removal
- Laser Resurfacing
All of the cosmetic procedures listed above go hand in hand with each other, as they all focus on different areas of the head, neck, and face. Sure, it may be more costly to stack these procedures together, but you will achieve a global youthful look that is uniform from numerous angles. To get a better understanding of how these procedures can work together and complement one another, it is a good idea to learn about what each one has to offer.

Testimonial
I am writing this review because I am so impressed with Dr. Tina Ho. About 7 years ago, I had plastic surgery by one of the best plastic surgeons in the Manhattan/Greenwich, Ct area. A surgeon whose clients include many tv personalities including Kathy Lee.
I was very pleased with the results. Needless to say, years later I looked to have some refresher work done, luckily I found Dr. Tina Ho who specializes in plastic surgery in the Bucks County/Philadelphia area. She has extensive experience in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery techniques. She also strives to provide meticulous, creative, and personalized care throughout the entire surgical process with the end goal of delivering beautiful and natural results.
So Why Do You Recommend Dr. Ho?
While women continue to make up the majority of plastic surgery patients, most surgeons are male. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the female-to-male ratio of plastic surgeons is approximately 1:5. Opening up to a stranger about your insecurities can be nerve-wracking.
That said, a female plastic surgeon better understands the feelings you have about your body and its aging process. With a female plastic surgeon, you can trust that you’ll be treated with the utmost compassion. You may also feel more comfortable showing another woman the areas of your body you’d like to enhance without fear of judgment.
I can attest to the fact that sitting in front of a male plastic surgeon, even one of the best, (picking apart your face/body) is both embarrassing, intimidating, and humiliating. Plus, it is hard to point out concerns about our faces or body to a man. However, a female plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Ho, can identify more closely with how women’s bodies develop over time. Ultimately it’s easier to talk to woman-to-woman about your problem areas, so it might be best to work with a female surgeon.
It is a given that all plastic surgeons want you to feel more confident in your appearance, but a woman can better understand your body and why you’re seeking plastic surgery. As a female plastic surgeon and mother, Dr. Ho can help you translate your treatment goals into realistic outcomes.
If you’re a woman looking into cosmetic surgery and to achieve your desired aesthetic, it’s worth your time to consult with Dr. Tina Ho who’s not only qualified and experienced, but your same gender. She takes the time to discuss your surgical goals and expected outcomes, as well as, the surgery and recovery process. She is extremely accessible, and makes it a point to address any questions or concerns you may have, and she focuses on recommending the right procedure(s) for you.
Dr. Tina Ho has a passion for combining surgery with aesthetics to help you achieve a youthful face and body that’s beautiful, proportional and natural-looking. She knows that no two patients are the same and she takes the time to understand your unique surgical goals. Dr. Ho takes great pride in seeing her patients enjoy a boost in their confidence and self-esteem following plastic surgery. A very satisfied, Dr. M.
After a Neck Lift
BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS
Each neck lift surgery is unique. Therefore, the types of incisions used vary. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness also vary.
Hematomas and seromas cause healing problems after surgery. To avoid these, Dr. Ho usually places closed suction drains in the neck to collect drainage. She also puts a compression dressing around the head and neck.
Every neck contouring patient will follow up with Dr. Ho on the first day after surgery. During this, she will remove and replace the compression dressing. She will also remove drains. Each patient will then return one and two weeks after surgery. At this time, Dr. Ho will remove sutures and staples.
The patient manages bruising and swelling using icing, head elevation, and compression dressing. Most bruising and swelling are gone in two weeks. Patients can also treat post-operative pain with prescribed medication.
People see improvements right away or after the swelling is gone. After surgeries, Dr. Ho follows up with her patients. Through this, she ensures that each patient heals smoothly. She also makes sure that each patient is happy with their results.

Other Procedures
Plastic surgeons sometimes perform other procedures along with a neck lift, depending on the patient. They include facelifts, fat transfers, submental lipo, chin augmentation, laser resurfacing, and eyelid surgery.
If these additional procedures are right for a patient, Dr. Ho will talk to the patient about them.
Neck Lift Cost
Neck lift pricing varies. This is because the cost is based on the surgeon’s skill and approach. Additionally, the amount of tissue removed and surgical time affect neck lift price. The average cost ranges from $28,000-$33,000 plus facility fees, depending on the extent of work needed, level of difficulty of surgery, and amount of time needed.

Frequently Asked Questions on Neck Lift Surgery
What is Mini Neck Lift surgery?
Traditional neck lift surgery restores a youthful appearance to the neck by redraping and resuspending the skin and deeper layers of the skin. A Mini neck lift procedure can be described as a modified version of traditional neck lift surgery that involves smaller incisions and less tissue resuspension. This surgery is ideal for surgical candidates with milder laxity of neck skin and muscle issues or those with good skin tone but requires deeper sculpting and resuspension of the neck that goes beyond chin liposuction. Mini neck lift surgery is therefore a less invasive procedure with shorter duration and downtime compared to traditional neck lift surgery.
What is Revision Neck Lift surgery?
Revision neck lift surgery refers to a neck lift procedure that is performed on a patient with a history of previous neck lifts. A patient may be a candidate for a revision neck lift if they are seeking corrective surgery to improve a new or persistent deformity after fully healing from recent surgery or repeat surgery several years following a primary neck lift. While neck lift surgery delivers permanent results, the surgical results may only last for several years out and then start to fade since the neck continues to age with time. Revision neck lift surgery is typically much more challenging compared to primary neck lift given that the neck anatomy is altered with scar tissue present. The risks of bleeding and poor healing as well as needed surgical time may be higher with revision surgery.
What Is Platysma Banding?
Platysma muscle hyperactivity causes platysma banding. Neck bands are is one of the first signs of aging in the neck. These neck bands look like vertical neck lines, usually in the midline of the neck. They become worse with facial movements.
For some patients, non-surgical options like neurotoxin injections are the best option for platysma banding. If the harsh neck bands can also be seen at rest, surgeons can best address them using neck lift surgery. In these cases, Dr. Ho uses a platysma plication technique. Dr. Ho resuspends platysma muscles at the midline and in the lateral neck. After this, patients see beautiful long-term results.
Dr. Ho is experienced in both non-surgical and surgical neck band treatments. As a result of this, she can recommend the best option based on neck anatomy and goals.
How painful is neck lift surgery?
Pain during surgery is not a concern, as neck lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. This is standard practice for neck lifts as it can be a rather invasive procedure.
Anesthesia is closely monitored to ensure you remain asleep and comfortable throughout the entire surgery. Within 24 to 48 hours after your surgery, you will experience soreness and tightness in the neck area that can be managed with prescribed pain medication by your surgeon. The level of pain after surgery is different for every patient, but the majority of patients do not require pain medication beyond a week after surgery.
(Took out best treatment for neck lift section here because it sounded redundant and did not make sense — alluded to skin tightening and not really surgery)
What types of neck lifts are there?
Neck lift procedures vary depending on extent of approach and on how invasive they may be. A traditional neck lift focuses on redraping the skin and deeper tissues using incisions under the chin and behind the ears into the hairline. A mini neck lift is a shorter, less invasive procedure where smaller incisions are made but there is less suspension performed. A direct neck lift is an option for male patients who prefer to have the scar in the center part of the neck only and not behind the ears. A deep neck lift focuses on deeper sculpting of the neck including removing deeper fat and muscle that chin liposuction does not address.
It is important for you to explore your options in a consultation with your surgeon. Post-operative recovery may look different depending on the type of neck lift you go for, and they each come with their fair share of risks.
However, these risks can be avoided by working with a surgeon who is well-versed in these types of cosmetic procedures. Regardless of what sounds good to you, it is essential that you and your surgeon select the procedure that is the best fit for your desired outcome.
Does a neck lift include jowls?
A neck lift definitely includes jowls, as it focuses on removing excess fat and treating areas of relaxed skin along the jawline that can lead to jowls. This is something that is definitely more prominent with age but does not have to remain a permanent issue. With a blend of techniques to help tighten the skin and remove fat, a neck lift can do quite a bit for improving the aesthetics and overall appearance of the neck, jawline, and face.
If jowls are your main concern of aging, a neck lift can offer the results you want for the long term. The severity of jowls will also determine how much work needs to be done.
Your surgeon will offer the insight you need on the best approach to minimizing the appearance of jowls while refining your surrounding features to support the aesthetic changes. (took out last sentence as it was misleading)
How do I get rid of turkey neck?
Turkey neck is something many people experience as they get older. It can be described as an excess of skin in the central part of the neck like what turkeys possess. If the appearance of turkey neck bothers you, there are a few things you can do to reduce or eliminate its appearance entirely. A good starting point is by exercising regularly, even in old age. With a mix of aerobic and strength exercises, you can help your neck uphold its elasticity and boost collagen levels as well.
Investing in good medical grade skin care products including a neck cream and skin resurfacing will also help prevent or minimize turkey neck. Outside of your own efforts, cosmetic surgery is always an option. If exercise, diet, and non-surgical procedures do not yield enough improvement, then turkey neck can be definitively eliminated with surgery.
