Introduction to Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling

RF microneedling, or radiofrequency microneedling, is a minimally invasive non-surgical skin treatment that targets skin issues including wrinkles, fine lines, scars, and uneven skin tone. RF microneedling in Philadelphia and Wayne improves skin elasticity and texture for a healthy and rejuvenated appearance to the skin.

How Does RF Microneedling Work?

As a person ages, collagen protein levels start to deplete. Collagen is responsible for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. A decline in collagen over time results in increased skin laxity with the development of wrinkles and fine lines.

Traditionally, microneedling is one skin resurfacing procedure that addresses skin aging issues. This treatment utilizes very fine needles that create micro-injuries in the skin to induce the skin stimulate collagen production.

The microneedling procedure has been enhanced with the introduction of radiofrequency energy technology. When the RF energy is delivered into the skin, it heats the skin and promotes increased growth of new elastin and collagen. The added RF component ensures that the results are more effective than those from traditional microneedling alone.

During a RF microneedling treatment, the needles deliver RF energy deep into the skin layers. The deeper the skin treatment, the greater degree of skin rejuvenation that can be achieved.

Who is the Ideal RF Microneedling Candidate?

The RF microneedling procedure is intended for patients with skin issues including:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Acne and chickenpoxscars
  • Surgical scars
  • Irregular skin tone and texture

How Should Patients Prepare for RF Microneedling?

Before the RF microneedling procedure, each patient may need to stop taking certain medications such as Retin-A. Additional medications may be prescribed by Dr. Ho prior to the treatment to prevent infection and minimize discomfort during the procedure. Dr. Ho will thoroughly review with each patient how to prepare accordingly for their RF microneedling treatment.

The procedure usually takes around an hour. During the treatment, the skin is cleansed and then applied a topical anesthetic to minimize pain. The RF microneedling device handpiece is then applied to the treatment areas via a series of stamp-like passes as determined by Dr. Ho. The depth and level of radiofrequency energy settings are planned out by Dr. Ho and tailored to the individual patient based on their treatment areas, skin characteristics, and treatment goals.

Often a minimum of three RF microneedling treaments spaced one month apart from each other are required before definitive results are observed with this procedure. Some patients may benefit from additional booster treatments every 6-12 months.

FAQ’s

What Should Patients Expect After RF Microneedling?
Immediate pinkness or redness of the skin is typically present in the treatment areas after each session that may take up to 1 week to resolve. Post-treatment pain and discomfort is usually mild and does not require prescribed medication. Most patients can return to work and can resume exercise the next day.

During the recovery process, the skin becomes dry and flaky with shedding of the old skin. New skin starts to grow in a week or so after the procedure with results increasingly appreciated as new collagen develops in the tissues.

How Long Do RF Microneedling Results Last?
The results of RF microneedling can last for years. To ensure optimal results after the initial series of RF microneedling, maintenance treatments can be pursued every 6-12 months.
What is the Cost of RF Microneedling?
The price of an RF microneedling treatment depends on the practice the patient chooses for their treatment session. Cost may vary depending on number and size of treatment areas, intensity of treatment, and number of treatments needed.
