What is Scar Revision?

Sexy woman's body
Scar revision is a type of surgery designed to improve the appearance of a scar. It is a reasonable treatment option when non-surgical treatments such as steroid injections, laser resurfacing, and dermabrasion have been exhausted and have resulted in limited benefit. A patient may be a candidate for scar revision if their scar is raised (hypertrophic scar), extends beyond its original boundaries (keloid), or is elongated and runs opposite to the natural lines and creases of the face. The goal of scar revision surgery is to replace the current scar with a more concealed, a more aesthetically pleasing scar. Dr. Ho specializes in scar revision for scars that occur in the head and neck region and performs each surgery according to the unique anatomy and surgical goals of the individual patient.

What is Dr. Ho’s approach to Scar Revision?

As a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Ho is well-recognized as a face specialist and attracts patients from all over Philadelphia and Wayne as well as greater Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Dr. Ho dedicates ample time and effort with every patient to review possible surgical and non-surgical treatment options and determine which ones are best suited to meet the goals and expectations of the patient. Dr. Ho’s approach to scar revision is conservative; she will advocate pursuing non-surgical procedures first before considering surgery, which is more invasive and ultimately replaces the scar with another scar. Her attention to detail combined with her artistic intuition ensures natural, aesthetically pleasing results for every scar revision patient. Depending on the size and location of the scar, Dr. Ho may perform scar revision surgery under local or general anesthesia and either in the office or at a surgery center. Every scar is different and requires a unique surgical plan. The scar may be completely excised or may be re-oriented to align more with the natural lines of the face. As a former reconstructive surgery patient, Dr. Ho understands that the appearance of the scars may matter greatly to the patient. She performs meticulous closure with each scar revision case to ensure that the new scars heal well and are minimal.

HOW MUCH DOES SCAR REVISION COST IN PHILADELPHIA?

The cost of performing a facial scar revision surgery can range from $500 to $3,500 or more depending on the severity of the scar. Many different factors influence the overall cost of the procedure such as the surgeon’s experience, the extensiveness of the surgery, and the geographic location.

At the initial consultation, Dr. Ho will develop a customized plan to best address the issues related to your scar and provide you with the total cost of the procedure. This upfront pricing helps to eliminate any confusion and reduce the financial stress of the surgery.

FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE COST OF THE PROCEDURE

The overall cost of a scar revision can be affected by many different factors but the most common include:

  • Surgeon experience and expertise. Scar revision can be challenging and having a surgeon with significant experience and expertise can ensure the best results are achieved. Top scar revision surgeons are in high demand leading to higher costs.
  • Surgical location. Depending on the extent of the scar revision surgery, the procedure can be performed in the office or require a surgery center. The added fees for the facility, anesthesia, and recovery can significantly impact the total cost.
  • Geographic location. Scar revision in Philadelphia can be more expensive due to the higher cost of operating a business and the higher demand that is seen in larger cities on the East Coast.

What should patients expect after Scar Revision?

Each scar revision procedure is different and catered to the individual patient. Therefore, the types of incisions utilized as well as extent of swelling and bruising that occur after surgery will vary by patient. Every reconstructive patient will follow-up with Dr. Ho one week after surgery for suture removal. Each patient will then follow-up again at weeks to months out at regular intervals for re-evaluation. The down time for surgical scar revision is usually minimal; most patients can return to normal daily activities apart from heavy lifting, straining, and strenuous activity the day after surgery. Post-operative pain is usually mild and managed well with prescribed pain medication. The scars are typically well-healed by two weeks out from surgery but take up to six months or longer to mature and achieve their final appearance. Dr. Ho seeks regular follow-up with her patients to ensure that every patient heals well and is satisfied with their surgical outcome.

FAQ’s

What is Z-Plasty?
Z-plasty is one scar revision technique that utilizes triangular flaps created and rotated along the scar to improve the appearance of the scar. It is often used to lengthen a contracted scar, to change the direction of the scar so that is oriented in the direction of the natural lines of the face, and to break up a prominent scar for better concealment. The 60-degree Z-plasty is the most common approach to Z-plasty and results in a 75% increase in scar length and 90-degree change in scar direction.
How painful is a scar revision?

Every scar revision surgery is different and thus can have varying degrees of pain. Luckily, in the majority of these procedures, the pain is typically minimal and well-controlled by using over-the-counter or prescription pain medications such as Tylenol. The majority of pain is experienced during the first few days after surgery and tends to resolve quickly.

How long is recovery from scar revision surgery?

The majority of patients will return to work and normal daily activities the day after surgery but should refrain from strenuous exercises, heavy lifting, and straining until cleared by their surgeon. Most scar revision surgeries have healed by 2 weeks, but the end result may take 6 to 12 months or more to be fully appreciated.

Does scar revision look natural?

The purpose of scar revision is to provide a more natural, less visible scar, but no scar can be permanently erased. The techniques employed during surgery help to minimize the tension on the healing tissue and promote a more aesthetically appealing scar. The goals are to help reduce the appearance of hypertrophic and keloid scarring and improve the natural look of the affected area.

What not to do after scar revision?

Minimizing tension and irritation to the scar is essential to its proper healing. Therefore, it is important to leave the area alone as much as possible. This includes refraining from putting any lotions, creams, or tapes on the incision unless instructed to do so by your surgeon. Protecting the scar from the damaging effects of UV light is important, and thus, using adequate sunscreen and wearing protective clothing is important during the healing process.
