Introduction to Cheek Augmentation

Add youthful lift and definition to your face with cheek augmentation. This treatment enhances your natural contours, restores lost volume, and creates a balanced, rejuvenated appearance.

What is Cheek Augmentation?

Cheek augmentation is a procedure designed to enhance the volume and projection of the cheeks. With aging, soft tissue and fat atrophy as well as bony resorption contribute to loss of volume and definition in the cheeks as well as in the rest of the face. Filler injection is a common treatment option for patients seeking to restore volume and shape to the cheeks. Hyaluronic acid is the most common type of material found in fillers. Depending on the type of product used and the area of the face treated, the treatment effect of fillers ranges from 1 to 2 years. Common filler products used by Dr. Ho for cheek augmentation include Juvederm® Voluma XC, Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Defyne, and Radiesse®. Cheek filler injection may be performed alone or in conjunction with other injectable procedures, including neurotoxin injection to the upper face, filler injection for temple hollowing or tear trough deformity, and jawline contouring. This procedure requires the expertise of a surgeon who specializes in plastic surgery of the face and understands facial anatomy well. Dr. Ho is highly experienced in filler injections and performs each procedure in an artistic manner according to the anatomic features and aesthetic goals of the individual patient.

She dedicates ample time and effort to establish realistic goals and expectations with every patient. She understands that restoring cheek volume and projection is crucial to achieving the more youthful, ideal inverted pyramid-shaped face. Dr. Ho also advocates for cheek augmentation when addressing deep nasolabial folds and hollowing under the eyes, as the lifting effect of cheek filler injection often improves these issues as well. She routinely obtains pre and post-treatment photographs throughout the process to allow for objective comparison. Dr. Ho utilizes a cannula technique for filler injections that minimizes the risks of bruising and swelling as well as vascular compromise.

What Should Patients Expect After Cheek Augmentation?

Each cheek augmentation procedure is different and catered to the individual patient in terms of how much filler product is needed and where the filler is injected. Therefore, the extent of swelling and bruising that occur after filler injection will vary by patient. There may be swelling or bruising at the injection sites or in the treated areas that is most often mild. Swelling and bruising is managed well with icing for the first two days after the procedure and head elevation the evening following the procedure. Bruised injection sites can be covered with concealer makeup starting 24 hours after the procedure. Post-treatment pain is usually not significant and may be managed with Tylenol as needed. The results of filler injection in the treated areas are typically observed immediately or after most of the immediate swelling has subsided. It is not uncommon for slight asymmetries to be observed initially after an injectable procedure that typically resolve by two weeks out when the treatment product has settled out and is in maximal effect. Dr. Ho seeks follow-up with her patients two weeks after each injectable procedure to ensure that every patient is satisfied with their treatment outcome.

“Cheek augmentation is all the rage and is always in season. The cheeks are my favorite area to treat with filler injection. Cheek filler injection nicely enhances volume and projection to the cheeks for that “oomph” lifting effect, softens nasolabial folds, helps minimize dark circles around the eyes, and can even accentuate the cheekbones laterally.”

On oblique view, the ideal youthful female face demonstrates a wide Ogee curve (a double soft S curve contour with lateral convex fullness at the level of the lateral brow and upper cheek).

Dr. Ho believes that while every face is unique, the ideal cheeks possess adequate volume and projection and are harmonious with the rest of the face. In an ideal female face, the cheeks are more laterally projected and contribute to the optimal inverted pyramid shape with a narrower lower face. On oblique view, the youthful, aesthetically pleasing female face maintains a wide Ogee curve, or double soft S curve contour with lateral convex fullness seen at the level of the lateral brow and upper cheek. In an ideal male face, the cheeks also carry adequate volume but are more medially projected and follow a more square facial appearance.

Telephone deformity is one complication from otoplasty that occurs as a result of overcorrection of the middle third of the ear. Reverse telephone deformity arises due to overcorrection of the superior and inferior thirds of the ear. Dr. Ho avoids these potential complications with a natural, conservative approach to otoplasty that follows closely the mathematical principles behind ideal ear anatomy.

In an ideal female face, the lower third of the face including the jawline is narrower compared to the upper two thirds and follows the optimal inverted pyramid shape. In an ideal male face, the lower third of the face including the jawline demonstrates a more square appearance.

Dr. Ho performs cheek augmentation in a variety of patients. Older patients who experience loss of volume as well as soft tissue descent due to gravity effects in the face with aging often benefit from cheek augmentation for facial rejuvenation. Younger patients with naturally thin faces seeking additional facial harmony or rejuvenation are prime candidates for cheek augmentation as well. When performing filler injection for hollowing under the eyes (tear trough deformity), Dr. Ho frequently performs adjunct cheek augmentation to create the most ideal aesthetic results. She also routinely performs cheek augmentation in both female and male patients for facial rejuvenation while naturally preserving their feminine and masculine features, respectively.

Injectable procedures are an appealing non-surgical treatment option as they are less invasive and involve less risks and downtime compared to surgery. In contrast to filler injections, surgery options for cheek augmentation including cheek implants and fat transfer typically yields more permanent results and may be considered advantageous from a long-term cost benefit analysis when compared against repeated injectable treatments. Dr. Ho is experienced in both non-surgical and surgical methods for facial rejuvenation and will discuss with each patient the best treatment options that meet their aesthetic concerns and goals.
